Autism Learning Resource

Autism Learning Resource

It is estimated that 1 in every 100 people in the UK is autistic, so it is inevitable that we will teach, interact, or work with someone with autism whatever our role is.

The Autism Learning Resource is a rich resource, designed to engage students across Sheffield Institute for Education on all Teacher Education, Early Childhood and Education Studies courses. This resource aims to develop an understanding of autism, and explores some different points of view. It is built around interviews with four people with different experiences of autism.

It was created for use in teaching to replace non-media learning materials. Was disseminated to all staff via the We Are Hallam email as it is a useful resource for everyone.

Potential Use Cases

This resource could be used to help inform and educate all staff and students and in turn to help create a more inclusive work and learning environment.

Similar resources could be implemented in a similar way to present multimedia and information.

Timescales

The resource took 2-3 months to complete. To recreate this resource, it is dependent on the learning activities surrounding the video as resources could be tailored and used in various ways depending on subject, audience and identified learning objectives.

Client Involvement

We worked with the academic to work out what was required and identify how the project aligned with the university's strategy. Working collaboratively we:

  • Set project timescales
  • Identify the target audience and how the content should be presented, stored and disseminated
  • Client to organise filming and brief the featured individuals
  • Identify individual(s) responsible for accessing and updating the resource and ensuring there was a contact on the resource for feedback and updates
  • Organise transcription of video captions

The client identified edits on video footage to achieve desired outcome and message.
