Transferring Marks to SITS

Before following this guide, please read Submitting Module Marks to the Assessment Team, which explains when this process is being used and when another process is being used for submitting your marks.

This guide explains how to use the Grade Approval and Transfer tool in Blackboard to transfer marks to SITS. Note this will only be available from 23 March 2026.

You should only transfer marks in Blackboard when you have a full set of task marks, i.e. including students who had 5 and 10 day extensions. Do not transfer partial sets of marks for a task. Marks do not need to be posted to students in Blackboard to transfer them.

Principles for Entering Marks in Gradebook

  • First sit tasks: A mark must be provided for all students. A numerical mark of zero should be given for students who do not submit.
  • Reassessment tasks: A mark should be provided for students who submit. As Gradebook doesn’t show which students are expected to submit reassessment tasks, non-submissions should be left blank. The Assessment Team will record these as zero in SITS.
  • Note: Module leaders do not need to check if a student has an accepted EC or stage 2 extension. The Assessment Team will check all marks of zero and where a student has an accepted EC/stage 2 extension this will be recorded in SITS.
  • A mark of 1 should be given for students where there are academic integrity concerns. This mark should not be posted to students on Blackboard. Once the outcome of the academic conduct investigation is concluded, the module leader should enter the actual mark into Gradebook, post to the student and complete the Mark Amendment Form. The Assessment Team will enter the mark into SITS.
  • All individual task grades must be submitted according to the University Grade Descriptors (DOCX, 66.8KB) and not pre-weighted according to the task weighting. Task weightings are set up in SITS and used to calculate the overall module mark.

How to use the tool

Step 1: Go to the Content page in your Blackboard module site.

Step 2: Select View module & institution tools from the Details & Actions menu.

Step 3: Select Grade Approval and Transfer from the list of Available tools. The Mark Approval Tool will launch in a new tab.

Step 4: Select the checkbox to the left of the module site ID and name. Press the Mark Column Approval and Transfer button.

Step 5: Select the checkbox to the left of the task/grade column name for the marks you are transferring. Press the Mark Approval and Transfer button.

Step 6: The first page of marks will load for checking. The default setting is to see 10 marks at a time but you can change this to up to 100. You should check the marks are accurate and there are no missing marks. When you are confident the marks are complete and correct, select the checkboxes next to those students. Depending on the cohort size, mark records may be listed across multiple pages. Changing between pages will remember the checkbox selections you make.

Step 7: When you have checked and selected all marks, press the Approve Marks button.

Step 8: Confirm that you want to approve the selected marks. A confirmation message will appear at the top of the page.

Note: by pressing confirm you are confirming that the marks are accurate and marks will be transferred into SITS.

Step 9: You can now close this tab.

Marks are transferred to SITS overnight. You can make changes to marks and repeat the marks transfer process up to 11:59pm on the same day to correct any mistakes. If any changes are needed after this time you will need to complete the Mark Amendment Form.
