Episode 1 - Mattering, Belonging and Happiness

Joining Joel is Professor Jason Arday from University of Cambridge and Sam Coulby from the EEDI team at Sheffield Hallam University to look at the pedagogy concepts of belonging, mattering and kindness.

Jason Arday

Jason Arday is Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge, Faculty of Education, and a Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge.

He was formerly a Guest Editor on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme and listed fourth on the prestigious Shaw Trust Disability Power 100 in 2023. Professor Arday has previously held the position of Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Glasgow, School of Education; Associate Professor in Sociology at Durham University in the Department of Sociology; and Deputy Executive Dean for People and Culture in the Faculty of Social Science and Health.

He is a Trustee of the British Sociological Association (BSA). Jason sits on the Centre for Labour and Social Studies (CLASS) National Advisory Panel, the NHS Race and Health Observatory Academic Reference Group and the ITV Cultural Advisory Council.

Sam Coulby 

Sam is Senior Business Partner for Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EEDI) at Hallam. Sam’s team has strategic oversight of the development of a culture of inclusion at Hallam and is responsible for ensuring the University’s approach to EEDI improves the experience of staff and students, is visible and has impact.

He has more than 20 years of HR/EEDI experience in Higher Education. This includes leading the development of Hallam’s Academic Careers Framework and reshaping the University’s professorial progression procedures - both with a view to better recognition of a broader range of academic career contributions, including teaching and learning.
