Blended Learning

Blended Learning

Approaches for flexible delivery

Laurillard (2012) sets out six types of learning activity (Acquisition, Inquiry, Discussion, Practice, Collaboration, Production) and suggests that a balanced mix of several or all these different types is important for effective learning. This framework is highly appropriate for the current situation as activity types can be designed such that they can take place in either an online or face-to-face mode. We have created guidance on using blended learning approaches which fit with these different learning activity types.

Acquisition

Students acquiring knowledge through listening, reading and thinking.

Inquiry

Students explore a question, problem, scenario or task.

Discussion

Students exploring, challenging and evidencing understanding by talking to tutors and peers.

Practice

Students developing practical skills through experimentation and experience.

Collaboration

Students working together to explore or create something.

Production

Students creating products which are assessed.
