UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT)

UK Advising and Tutoring (UKAT)

UKAT (the United Kingdom Advising and Tutoring association) is a learned society interested in advancing the scholarship and practice of student advising and personal tutoring in Higher Education in the UK. Sheffield Hallam holds institutional membership of UKAT meaning we can take advantage of a wealth of resources and opportunities provided by UKAT.

UKAT provide a professional recognition scheme which allows Academic Advisers to evidence their competencies and skills in the delivery of effective, quality-enhanced approaches to advising students. Referenced against the UKAT Professional Framework for Advising and Tutoring, the professional recognition scheme encourages applicants to develop a reflective approach to the continual enhancement of their advising and tutoring practice informed by scholarship within the field.

There are three levels of recognition:

Recognised Practitioner in Advising (RPA)

Aimed at front-line personal tutors and academic advisors, this level of recognition demonstrates individual understanding and application of a broad range of effective approaches in delivering high-quality personal tutoring/advising and support for student success.

Recognised Senior Advisor (RSA)

Recognition at this level demonstrates sustained effectiveness in student support through the organisation, leadership, or management of personal tutoring/academic advising. It is aimed at those with departmental or institutional responsibilities for leading and developing others in the implementation and delivery of effective personal tutoring/academic advising practices.

Recognised Leader in Advising (RLA)

Recognises a sustained record of impact on student success at a strategic level through the coordination and provision of personal tutoring/academic advising. It is aimed at highly experienced tutors/advisors who can demonstrate impact at an institutional, national or international level.

Each academic year Hallam support up to five members of staff to complete their professional recognition applications.

The 24/25 academic year call for expressions of interest to complete a professional recognition closed in October 2024. Please look out for future expression of interest deadlines.
