Choosing assessment types

Choosing assessment types

There are two main types of assessment in PebblePad.

Workbooks

Workbooks are multi-page templates where all students will work on the same structured document, by filling in forms and adding evidence where prompted. The Workbook is created in advance by tutors, and this will usually be the easiest way for students to work in PebblePad. Another benefit is you can report on specific elements of a workbook to access statistics on your cohort's progress.

Workbooks are recommended where possible to keep assessment as simple as possible for students. They are ideal for situations where all students will be working through the same, or very similar, material in a consistent way.

Portfolios

Portfolios are also multi-page documents, but this time the student starts with a blank canvas and is in full control. They can add new material and pages in any order they want. This gives a lot more creative opportunity to the student, but requires them to have more advanced knowledge of using the features of PebblePad. It also means there are more limited reports you can run, due to the lack consistency in the work produced.

Portfolios are recommended where students may be creating reflective work that is unique to them. This could include an artistic portfolio, or a record of a personal experience such as a year abroad.

Summary

  • Workbooks are easy to use by students, consistent and fully reportable.
  • Portfolios give more creative opportunity, but take more training for students, and are not as reportable.
