While assessment deadlines are published in advance to help students plan and prepare for the assessments they need to complete, sometimes students will experience ill health or difficult personal circumstances which mean they may not be able to submit for the original deadline. The University has two mechanisms to support students in this situation, extensions and extenuating circumstances requests (ECs).

Extenuating Circumstances (ECs)
Where a student feels their performance or ability to work on their assessments has been negatively affected by situations beyond their control, they can ask for an additional chance to complete the assessment due to their 'exceptional circumstances'. A student can apply for an EC regardless of if they submitted work or not. ECs can be requested for first and reassessment attempts.
Markers do not need to know if a student has an EC or not when marking work. If the student has submitted work by their personal deadline, it should be marked. If the student has not submitted any work by their personal deadline, they should receive a 0 mark.
If the EC request is approved, the student will normally be given another chance at the assessment (this may not happen if it would not benefit the student), by completing the reassessment task in the next reassessment period, with it considered a deferral.
