Academic Induction Review

Academic Induction Review

The university recognises the need to ensure all new academic teaching staff receive a comprehensive induction programme. The aim of the Academic Induction Framework (AIF) is to support and integrate new academic staff into their new role and ensure they have the information and tools they need to successfully start their teaching role.  Currently, the academic induction offer is split between:

  • Human Resources and Organisational Development (HROD): Following recruitment, all new staff are required to complete the new starter induction programme. The academic induction journal which is located on the induction website outlines the important activities that you must undertake in the first 6 months. This includes attendance at key induction events. This is the university's central induction programme and is separate to the local induction programme put together by your college/department.
  • College/Department: provides a local new starter induction event that provides new staff with the relevant guidance and information.
  • Academic Development & Inclusion (ADI): provides an academic development offer around inclusive teaching and learning as well as induction for those staff undertaking an additional role, such as course and module leader.

AD&I are working with stakeholders from Colleges > Departments > HROD colleagues to review the existing offer and develop a university-wide academic induction framework with a view to streamlining the activities currently taking place and review the materials shared with new starters.

New academic/teaching staff:

  • If you have gone through the induction process within the last 12 months, we'd very much welcome your feedback and engagement with this project. We're looking at the information shared with you before you arrived and once you started in post. Did the academic induction journal provide everything you needed or did your college/department provide the necessary information?

New academic/teaching Line Manager:

  • What was your experience of the recruitment/induction process? Were you able to navigate the information shared on your Line Manager checklist? Did you encounter any barriers/delays to getting everything set up for your new starter?
  • What did your own induction support as a Line Manager (G8 above) look like?

Development Plan

On the 3rd July 2023, we hosted our first workshop to explore what a good academic induction looks like.  We were joined by college and department colleagues alongside some service stakeholders to explore best practice and consider the feedback from new staff. Here are our findings. The next session will be hosted in the new semester 2023.
