Information on students in distress
Staff looking for information on how to support a student in distress or an emergency, or refer a student for support should see information on the Sheffield Hallam University Academic Advising SharePoint page.
Signposting to other support
Academic Advisers are an important point of contact for students, but it is essential that Academic Advisers work within the boundaries of their role. Where students have a support need outside of these boundaries they should be signposted to other services.
Staff should do this in a positive way, e.g. “I want to get you to the best person to support you”, so that students do not feel they are being bounced from person to person.
Academic Advisers will commonly signpost to:
Ordinarily Academic advisers would encourage their students to be autonomous in accessing other support services but there might be times when the Academic Adviser refers a student. Academic Advisers should take care to follow GDPR guidelines and refer to guidance on obtaining consent to share information when sharing information.
Staff are supported by their School/Institute Academic Advising Lead, who can advise on where to signpost students to.
