Question Banks in Blackboard

Question banks serve as centralised repositories within your Blackboard site where you can create, organise, and store assessment questions. This enables you to reuse questions in multiple tests or add Question Pools to your assessments.

2024/25 update: AI Auto-generated questions in Blackboard are now enabled. You can generate questions for your tests based on course content you choose from your site.

This support article contains the following instructions:

  • Create a Question bank
  • Copy a Question bank (from another site)
  • Import a Question bank

Accessing Question Banks

Question banks are found on the content page of your Blackboard site, in the Details and Actions panel. Please note that Question banks are only visible to instructors, not students.

To access your Question banks:

  1. Navigate to the Details and Actions panel on your Content page of your Blackboard site
  2. Click Manage banks

Create a Question Bank

  1. Click Manage banks in the Details and Actions panel
  2. Click the Add Content (+) icon and select New to create a new Question bank
  3. Add a meaningful name to your new Question bank at the top of the screen
  4. Use the Add Content (+) icon to add questions, choosing the appropriate question types (e.g. multiple choice, etc.) to build your set of questions

Note: Once you begin adding questions, you'll see a filter tool on the left-hand side of the screen. This can be helpful if you have a large Question bank and want to search for a specific keyword or question type.

  1. When finished, use the Close window (×) button (top left) to close the Question bank window

Copy a Question Bank (from Another Site)

  1. Open the Blackboard site where you want the Question bank copied into (i.e. the site that needs the Question bank)
  2. Click the Add Content (+) icon and choose Copy Content
  3. Type into the search box the name or ID of the Blackboard site that contains the Question banks you want to copy from. Ensure that you select the appropriate site category (i.e. choose either Modules or Organisations)
  4. You now have two options:
◾ Option 1: If you want to copy across all the Question banks, then tick the Question bank folder
◾ Option 2: If you have a specific Question bank to copy, click the Question banks folder icon to open the folder. Tick the Question banks you want to copy across. You may copy as many as you need
  5. Once you have your selection, click the Start Copy button at the bottom of the screen

Your Blackboard site will need a few moments to complete the copy task and will refresh when the copy is completed.

  1. To find the copied Question banks, click Manage banks in the Details and Actions panel on your Blackboard site

Import a Question Bank
